Below are some brief descriptions and overviews of each leg, to give a sense of the spirit of the race and the level of effort required. Follow the "contact" link for more detailed turn by turn info, maps, and GPS files.

Leg 1: Kelly Canyon

Major Hazards: Getting Lost, MTB incident

Description:  From Buffalo Park, this leg follows urban trails and roads to join up with the AZ trail and new Flagstaff Loop Trail out to Fort Tuthill.  From there it follows fun singletrack down to Kachina Village and then drops down some moderately technical singletrack into Kelly Canyon.  After crossing pumphouse wash, forest roads lead to Oak Creek Overlook.

Leg 2: Oak Creek Overlook

Length: Climbing: 4 Pitches, biking on dirt roads: 17.5 miles

Description:  1) Do 4 unique pitches at the overlook. Rules: a) Only climbs to the left of dugald’s right are allowed b) You have to do at least one route 5.9 or harder 2) bike on forest roads up onto the Mesa to Fenrow Cabin

Leg 3: Secret Canyon

Description: You’ll run on forest roads through the Secret Mountain Wilderness and then drop into Secret canyon.  After some canyon scrambling you follow the trail along Secret Canyon to the Handoff.

Leg 4: Queen Vic

Length: 3 easy pitches, 3.4 miles on foot, 16.1 miles on bike

Finish: Brin’s Mesa / Jordan Trailhead

Major Hazards: climbing in the dark, going down Tyler’s Super Secret Canyon in the dark, biking along 179 (in the dark)

Overview: Queen Victoria spire at night: a triple header! get your climbing gear on and your running shoes and get on your bike.  Bike down Dry Creek Rd to Schnebly Hill rd up to a trailhead indicated on your GPS.  Leave your bike and run west to Queen Vic.  Climb Queen Vic and then head around the north side of Mooses Butte on the Hangover Trail.  Cross over to the south side and then bail off the trail into Tyler's favorite secret canyon route.  This will lead you right back to your bikes.  Bike through downtown Sedona to the Brin's Mesa trailhead

Leg 5: Sedona Mountain Bike + Brin’s Mesa run

Start: Brin’s Mesa Trailhead

Finish: Jack’s Canyon Trailhead

Description: This beautiful ride should take place around dawn – enjoy!  It it will likely start a little predawn, so expect to need a really bright light.  After starting with a steep run up and over Brin’s Mesa, pick up your bikes at Dry Creek Rd and ride some of the best red dirt Sedona has to offer.  Although none of the trails are the hardest in Sedona, there are some unrelenting technical sections that could be rough for the uninitiated. For those that know the trails, the route is Chuckwagon-Mescal-Aerie-Western Civilization-Last Frontier-Girdner-Herkenham-Old Post-Ramshead-Ridge-Templeton-Slim Shady-Big Park-VOC loop -- I'm tired just writing it!

Leg 6: Jack’s Canyon

Description: Head up up up beautiful Jack's Canyon all the way to Schnebly Hill Rd.

Leg 7: Mormon Mountain

Length: cycling dirt roads: 25.9 miles, moderately technical mountain biking: 9.6 miles

Description: Most of this leg winds around dirt roads in the scenic meadows between Schnebly hill road and Mormon Lake.  After climbing Mormon Mountain you are treated to a downhill single track ride north to Lake Mary

Leg 8: Lake Mary

Start: South End of Lake Mary

Finish: Canyon Vista Campground

Major Hazards: Capsizing, getting hit by wakeboarders, getting hit by car on lake mary road

Description:

A pair will swim the length of Lake Mary from the southernmost pullout to the main dock at the north end of the lake.  However there is one catch – only one person will be swimming at a time; the other person has to remain alongside the swimmer on a standup paddleboard.  The swimmer and paddleboarder can switch as often as desired, including zero times.  The SUP can be paddled as desired including kneeling or laying down.  If desired, the swimmer can rest holding on to the SUP, however no towing is allowed.  Note: it will likely be windy.  In the wrong direction, of course. There is a chance that the narrows may be too shallow to swim.  In this case, any non-motorized method of conveyance through the water is allowed (crawling, walking, both people on paddleboard, get creative). Once you get to the dock, hop on bikes and ride six quick miles northwest to the pit (Canyon Vista campground)

Leg 9: Walnut Canyon

Finish: Old Walnut Canyon Road / AZ Trail Trailhead

Major Hazards: Climbing accident caused by climbing Mr. Slate in the dark, getting lost

Description: From the campground, you’ll carry the lightest possible rope and rack down to The Pit and climb Mr. Slate, the classic moderate (10b) sport climb.  From the top of Mr. Slate, continue up 4th class and easy 5th until you run into the AZ trail.  Then pack up your gear (or leave it) and run north along sandy canyon to fischer point.  Climb up to fischer point on the AZ trail and continue on the AZ trail until you hit the trailhead on old walnut canyon road. 

Leg 10: East Flagstaff Prairie Run

Description: stick to the AZ trail for 11.4 miles around the prairies of east Flagstaff.  The handoff is at the Conoco gas station where the AZ trail goes underneath 89A just south of the Townsend Winona Junction.

Leg 11: Snowbowl Road

Description: Road bike along 89A, through north Flagstaff, along 180, and up Snowbowl Road.  Most likely in the middle of the night. 

Leg 12: Kendrick Park

Length: cycling: 15.5 miles of singletrack, 8 miles of dirt road

Elevation Gain/Loss: 2690' / -2360'

Description:  Head out to Kendrick park north of the peaks and have a fun romp in the dark on some great sections of the AZ trail.  Pay the price for your fun and climb back up to snowbowl.

Leg 13: San Francisco Peaks

Major Hazards: fatigue, cramping, other forms of physical breakdown, hallucinations leading to getting lost, dehydration/hyponatremia

Description: Easier said than done.  Head up Humphreys trail to the saddle between Agassiz and Humphreys.  Follow the Weatherford Trail South towards Agassiz and follow the Weatherford trail across Doyle Saddle all the way down to Shultz Tank.  Some of the upper weatherford may be covered in limited snow.

Leg 14: Mt Elden Slabs

Length: trail running: 7.1 miles, 3rd class scrambling: 1 mile

Elevation Gain/Loss: 2920' / -1660'

Major Hazards: getting lost, falling on the slabs due to stupefying fatigue

Description: From Shultz Tank, follow the AZ trail and Christmas Tree Trail downhill to the southeast corner of Mount Elden.  Scramble up this exposed 3rd class rock to the summit of Mt. Elden.

Leg 15: Mt. Elden Mountain MTB

Length: technical mountain biking: 18 miles

Elevation Gain/Loss: 1920' / -4340'
